Overcoming information overload…

It the big problem of today, isn’t it? Information Overload. As the connected world develops and we all become more networking, we become part of the network. This has massive benefits for our business, careers and personal lifes, but it brings with it problems. And the biggest of these problems is Information Overload….

So what can we do to overcome Information Overload? Well it’s all about taking control. It’s a state of mind that you have to develop, that puts you back in control….

Just because you have email in your inbox doesn’t mean you HAVE to read it!

It’s the technology that supposed to serve us, not the other way round! Don’t become a slave to the inbox. You should not be at the beck and call of technology.  It’s easy to start putting this into practise - and it will help you develop the empowering mindset of control over your technology… To start, simply shut down your email. That’s it. Close it Down - turn it off. And no I don’t mean let it hide in your system tray. Now - get on with your working day, and return to your email ONLY WHEN YOU NEED TO USE IT!

When you open it up, you may read a few messages, you may even feel the need to respond to a few urgent messages. You can do this, but only after you’ve finished the task which required you to go into your email. Don’t feel that you need to read, or reply to any messages that are there. Once you’ve completed your task, and replied to any urgent messages you felt the need to deal with - CLOSE DOWN YOUR EMAIL AGAIN! Now move onto your next task…

Don’t work in your email program. I see so many people doing this, and sure, I am a culprit too. But since turning off all new email notifications, I’ve definitely seen a huge increase in productivity.
